Every evening, in a quiet backyard, a young woman still sits down and says goodnight to her best friend. He hasn’t been there to hear her in over a year. But she keeps showing up anyway.
Marie and her younger sister, Emilie, grew up with their dog, Mellow, from the time Emilie was just six years old.
While Mellow belonged to the whole family, it was Emilie he bonded with most closely.
Each night before bed, she’d sit beside him and talk, about her day, her worries, her hopes for tomorrow, and he would simply listen, the way only a dog can.
As Mellow aged, his body slowed and his eyesight faded, but the bond between him and Emilie never did.
She carried him from room to room when his legs could no longer manage the stairs, and even bought the family little bell anklets so Mellow could always hear them coming and know where they were.
Last September, after a long and full life, Mellow passed away from old age.

The family laid him to rest in their backyard, beneath a small stone and a statue shaped like a heart.
What no one realized right away was that Emilie never stopped her nightly routine.
Recently, while mowing the lawn near Mellow’s grave, the girls’ father noticed something quiet but unmistakable: a pair of footprints worn into the grass beside the headstone.
Emilie had been visiting every single evening, sitting with Mellow the way she always had, telling him about her day, and how much they all still miss him.
“It soothes her to say goodnight,” Marie told The Dodo, “like she did when he was still here.”
Grief doesn’t always look loud.
Sometimes it looks like worn grass beside a small stone, and a promise kept quietly, night after night.
Have you ever kept a little ritual alive for a pet you’ve lost?
