Sometimes a moment of faith doesn’t need words at all, just a paw quietly reaching out, and a hand willing to hold it.
At Santo Domingo Savio parish in Villavicencio, Colombia, Father Carlos Mario Peña Lopera was praying over a young woman, his hand resting gently on her head, when Simón, a rescued dog who has become part of parish life, slowly lifted one paw toward him.
Without breaking his prayer, Father Carlos simply took the paw in his hand and continued.
It lasted only a moment, but it was captured on video and quickly traveled far beyond the walls of that church.
Simón wasn’t a stray who wandered in that day.
According to Noticias Caracol, he and another rescued dog named Luna have accompanied Father Carlos for more than six years, present during daily Mass and familiar faces to everyone in the parish.
This wasn’t even their first moment to go viral.
Weeks earlier, the two dogs began barking and howling along with the music during a service, joining in as an unexpected four legged choir while Father Carlos simply smiled and kept going.
What makes their story worth sitting with, though, isn’t the viral moments themselves. It’s what came before any camera was pointed their way.
Simón and Luna were dogs who needed somewhere to belong.
Instead of being pushed to the margins, they were welcomed in, made part of everyday life, present at the altar not as a novelty, but as members of a community built on compassion.
“Faithful in the small things,” Scripture reminds us in Luke 16:10, and there’s something quietly fitting about a rescued dog and a devoted priest reminding a congregation of exactly that.
No one can know for certain what Simón understood about that prayer. But we know what happened.
He reached out. And someone was there to take his paw.
