Most passengers wear a leather jacket and helmet because they have to. Milly wears hers because her dad made sure she’d never have it any other way.
Milly, a Bichon Frise from Scotland, has spent the last decade riding shotgun on the back of her dad Paul Crossan’s motorcycle.
Paul, a retired plumber, rescued Milly from a shelter after learning she’d been neglected by her previous owners.
He’d been looking for a dog who could join him on the road, and the moment he met her, he knew.
These days, the pair are a familiar, sparkly sight cruising around Scotland together, often stopping at senior care centers along the way just to spread a little joy.
What really steals the show, though, is Milly’s gear.
She climbs into her own customized tank bag, kitted out in a tiny leather jacket and jeans, but the crowning piece is her rhinestone-encrusted, custom-built motorcycle helmet.
Paul has spent years hand-making Milly’s helmets himself, shaping them to protect her eyes from road debris and keep her ears from flapping in the wind.
He’s careful to note they’re not certified crash protection like a human rider’s helmet.
Their real job is comfort and safety from the elements, with proper ventilation and a snug, secure fit.
Having Milly on board has actually changed the way Paul rides.
“I ride safer with her on the bike,” he said. “She has a proper dog bag and I know all the risks. She’s my number one priority. I’d be lost without her.”
Milly seems just as devoted right back.
When Paul asks her to greet people they pass, she’ll turn around and happily yap hello, tail wagging the whole time. “She loves it,” Paul said. “She’s a good girl.”
The pair have even taken on longer adventures together, including a full trip around Scotland’s famous North Coast 500 route, camping along the way.
According to Paul, as long as Milly keeps enjoying the ride, she’ll always have a seat behind him.
Ten years, countless miles, and one very stylish helmet later, Milly is proof that a second chance can turn into an entire life spent side by side.
