A dog is alive today because a firefighter refused to give up, and because she refused to give up on herself first.
Last week in St. Charles Parish, Louisiana, someone tossed a Pit bull off the elevated portion of Interstate 310, sending her into an alligator-infested swamp below.
Somehow, she survived the fall, swam to a small patch of land, and held on until help arrived.
The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to the call, and multiple agencies worked together for the rescue, including the St. Rose Fire Department and St. Charles Parish Animal Control.
Volunteer firefighter Eddie Simpson lowered himself down into the swamp to reach her.
When the usual rescue basket proved too unstable in the water, he made a different call entirely: he picked up the soaking wet, 70 pound dog with one arm and carried her up a 40 foot ladder himself.
The rescue took roughly 45 minutes from start to finish.
At the shelter, staff discovered exactly how she’d survived down there.
Her injuries included bites that appeared to have come from an alligator, likely grabbing her by the neck.
Despite everything, she was otherwise in good health, estimated to be between 5 and 7 years old.
Shelter staff named her Ally, though rescuers on scene couldn’t resist a more fitting nickname: Allie Gator.
Investigators say it’s still unclear whether Ally was thrown from the highway by her owner or had been stolen beforehand.
The case remains open, and anyone with information has been asked to contact the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office.
While the investigation continued, Ally recovered at the St. Charles Parish Animal Shelter, initially held as evidence in the case before eventually becoming available for adoption.
No owner ever came forward to claim her.
About a month later, the shelter found her a permanent home. A family in New Jersey adopted Ally, and she spent her first Christmas in a place built entirely around loving her.
“She is doing great in New Jersey,” the shelter later shared. “Her family says she is the best dog, and they couldn’t be happier with her.”
From a swamp full of alligators to a family who couldn’t be happier to have her, Ally’s story is proof of just how much can change in a matter of months.
