For eight years, Stuart Hutchinson faced brain cancer with a courage that never seemed to waver.
Through multiple surgeries, rounds of chemotherapy, and radiation, one companion stayed close through nearly all of it: his French bulldog, Nero.
Stuart, from Scotland, was first diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2011. He was declared cancer-free after treatment, only for another tumor to appear on his neck in 2014.
It was removed, but the cancer returned again at the end of 2018. This time, Stuart was offered palliative chemotherapy.
Rather than let that final chapter be defined by illness, he spent the following year marking milestones that mattered to him, including marrying his childhood sweetheart, Danielle, in January 2019.
Of the family’s three dogs, Nero held a special place. “He was the one who got the extra walks,” Stuart’s mother, Fiona Conaghan, told TODAY, “I think because he was the friendliest and least bouncy.” Stuart and Nero had been inseparable for years.
On August 11, Stuart passed away at his mother’s home, with Danielle by his side. That same day, Danielle’s father returned to the couple’s house to pick up a few belongings and found Nero unwell.

He rushed the dog to a veterinarian, where the vet believed the sudden illness may have been connected to a rupture somewhere along Nero’s spine, though the exact cause was never confirmed.
By his mother’s estimate, Nero passed away just ten to fifteen minutes after Stuart.
The two were laid to rest together, in a family plot alongside Stuart’s grandparents.
“They were inseparable,” Fiona said of the bond between her son and his dog, “and went everywhere together.”
Their story has since moved many who hear it, not because it offers easy comfort, but because it speaks to something quietly understood by anyone who has loved an animal: that some bonds do not end when a life does.
