As an ICU nurse in Georgia, Kimberly Still had cared for countless patients in their final days.
But one relationship would end up changing her life forever, and it wasn’t with a person.
While caring for a dying patient who was already comatose, Still got to know the woman’s family and learned about the one thing that had meant everything to her patient: a loyal little Chihuahua named Jax.
“The only possession she had in life was this dog, and she loved him so much, and he was with her through so much,” Still told Inside Edition.
After the patient passed away, there was no one left to take Jax in. He ended up at a shelter outside Atlanta, facing the very real risk of being euthanized simply because he had nowhere else to go.
When Still found out, she couldn’t just let that happen. “I was like, well, I have to go get this dog,” she said. Her plan at first was simple: track Jax down, make sure he was safe, and find him a loving forever home.
But the moment she arrived at the shelter and Jax was placed in her arms, something changed.
“The second that they brought him to me at the pound, I was like, I can never get rid of him. He is mine forever,” Still said.
What began as an act of duty turned into an act of love. Still brought Jax home and introduced him to her own dog, and the two bonded instantly, as if they’d always been a family.
Adopting Jax became her final gift to the patient she had cared for so deeply, a way of honoring the bond between a woman and the dog who never left her side.
“It’s been so perfect. I just truly think that we were meant to be together,” Still said.
Kimberly Still is now being recognized for her extraordinary compassion, though for Jax, the real reward is simply having a home again.
From the edge of losing everything to finding a family who will love him for the rest of his life, Jax’s story is a beautiful reminder that sometimes the people who show up for us in life keep showing up for the ones we love, even after we’re gone.
