For over 13 years, Joeann Knights and her pit bull mix, Poppy, were inseparable.
From raising two of Poppy’s puppies together to exploring their hometown of Lowestoft, England, side by side, theirs was the kind of bond that doesn’t simply end when a heart stops beating.
“I never ever left her in her 13 and a half years of life,” Knights told The Dodo. “She was amazing and clever.”
Poppy had earned a reputation for being not just loyal, but surprisingly clever and mischievous.

One memorable day, Knights came home to find Poppy missing entirely, only to be led by Poppy’s own sons to the back door, where their resourceful mother was waiting patiently after climbing out a window and getting stuck outside.
Just shy of her fourteenth birthday, Poppy fell gravely ill.
After more than 13 years together, Knights faced the heartbreaking decision to say goodbye, holding her beloved dog close one final time and promising to carry her memory forever.
The grief that followed was overwhelming. But not long after, strange, comforting signs began appearing in Knights’ life.
First, she discovered an unusual dark gray feather tucked inside her pantry, one she couldn’t explain or place.
Then, six months later, she opened her front door to find something even more astonishing, a snail trail along her fence that had formed the unmistakable shape of Poppy’s face.
“I cried,” Knights said. “I thought I was going mad.”
The delicate portrait lingered for five days before rain finally washed it away. Not long after, Poppy’s face appeared once more, this time faintly visible in a photo Knights had taken of her own window.
Then came the moment that changed everything.

Six months later, a woman showed up at Knights’ door holding a puppy whose fur matched that mysterious gray feather perfectly.
“I went and saw the puppy, she was the same as the feather,” Knights said. “I took the puppy. I don’t care what anybody says or believes, my girl sent me the puppy.”
Knights named the puppy Amber, and she quickly became part of the family alongside Poppy’s remaining son.
It’s now been three years since Poppy crossed the rainbow bridge, and while the ache of losing her hasn’t faded, Knights finds comfort in believing her sweet, clever girl is still finding ways to say hello.
