For four days, he sat in the same spot. Gazing quietly at the river below. Waiting for someone who would never come back.
On the Yangtze Bridge in Wuhan, China, passersby began to notice a dog sitting alone, calm and still, at the exact spot where his owner had disappeared days before.
He didn’t bark. He didn’t wander. He simply stayed, as if keeping a vigil only he understood.
Local resident Xu noticed the dog appeared clean, healthy, and clearly well-loved, and suspected he belonged to someone.
Photos of the faithful dog staring silently over the bridge’s railing began spreading across social media in China, touching the hearts of thousands.
Du Fan, director of the Wuhan Small Animal Protection Association, later confirmed that the dog’s owner had passed away after jumping from the bridge. The dog had been waiting there ever since.
Animal welfare volunteers, fearing for his safety, began searching for him.
When he eventually disappeared from the bridge, many feared he had wandered off and could not be found. Thankfully, rescuers located him and brought him to safety.
The Wuhan Small Animal Protection Association is now working to find him a loving forever home.
“We are still counting on finding a new owner for the dog,” Du Fan said. “We think it’s too sad for such a loyal dog to stray on the streets.”
He waited four days for someone who could not return. Now it is our turn to show up for him.
