For eight days, she called his name. And for eight days, there was nothing but silence.
When the devastating earthquakes struck Venezuela on June 24, the building where Buddy lived with his family collapsed into rubble.
In the chaos that followed, his owner searched desperately, screaming his name through gaps in the concrete.
She came back again and again, climbing through the wreckage of what used to be their home, listening for any sign of life.
Nothing. Not a single bark.
By day eight, she had nearly accepted the unthinkable.
But that morning, something made her go back one more time. A neighbor told her a statue of the Virgin Mary had been sitting in the rubble since the very first day.
She picked it up, tucked it among the things she was taking with her, and climbed back up into the ruins. And like every time before, she called out his name.
“Buddy. Buddy. Buddy.”
Then, for the very first time in eight days, she heard it.
A bark.
She screamed for help. Rescuers who had been working on the other side of the building came running immediately.
They smashed through the concrete and pulled Buddy out through the hole, dust-covered, weak, and badly dehydrated, but alive.
“It’s a miracle,” his owner said through tears, still shaking. “It’s a miracle that he is here with me. Everything was crushed. Everything. And yet here he is.”
Veterinarians were called to the scene and began monitoring Buddy’s condition on the spot, administering fluids and checking his recovery. Despite the shock and dehydration, he was otherwise unharmed.
Eight days beneath the rubble. Eight days of silence. And then one bark that changed everything.
Sometimes hope is just one more call of their name away.
