Dolly Parton never needed to legally own a dog for one to become family.
For Billy the Kid, a French Bulldog belonging to her longtime manager Danny Nozell, that was never in question.
Billy became known over the years as Dolly’s “god dog,” and their bond grew into something that went well beyond the occasional celebrity photo.
He served as the brand ambassador for Doggy Parton, the pet apparel line she launched in 2022, and inspired a series of children’s books built around his personality.
In one widely shared video, Dolly serenaded Billy with “Happy Birthday” for his fifth birthday while he sat patiently through the attention, clearly used to being adored.
Her love for dogs went back decades before Billy came along. In the 1980s, she had a small dog named Popeye, who she later said helped carry her through a genuinely difficult period in her life.
That compassion extended well beyond her own pets, too.
She established the Eagle Mountain Sanctuary, supported animal welfare campaigns, and directed proceeds from Doggy Parton toward Willa B. Farms Animal Rescue.
Her advocacy reached organizations like PETA as well.
She lent her song “Will He Be Waiting for Me?” for a PETA ad reminding people that dogs are social animals who suffer when left alone for long stretches.
Years earlier, after a lost dog was found near one of her UK concerts, Dolly publicly offered to give the dog a home herself if no family came forward. The dog was ultimately reunited with her own family instead.
Following Dolly Parton’s death on August 25, at age 80, the world is remembering a career built on music, film, and philanthropy that touched millions of lives.
But it’s often the smaller relationships that say just as much about who someone truly was.
Somewhere in the middle of decades spent making people smile, Dolly also made sure one small French Bulldog knew, without question, that he was loved.
