Along a quiet cove on the coast of Almería, Spain, the tide was creeping closer, and an old dog had nowhere left to go.
He was painfully thin, alone, and trapped against the rocks, with seawater already reaching his frail body.
No one knows exactly how he ended up there or how long he’d been stranded, fighting to stay above the rising water with no way to climb out on his own.
His rescue came down to a matter of timing.
A tourist excursion boat happened to be passing through the area, and the crew on board spotted him. Instead of continuing on, they chose to stop.
That single decision to notice, to care, and to act is the reason this dog is alive today.
He’s believed to be a Podenco, roughly eight years old, and he carries no microchip, so his past remains a mystery.
Podencos are often used for hunting in Spain, and sadly, many are abandoned once they’re no longer considered useful for that purpose.
Whatever this dog’s story was before that cove, he’s now safe.
He’s currently in the care of SOS Perros de Adra, a local animal rescue association in Almería that stepped in to take responsibility for him.
The group hasn’t asked for donations.
Their message is simpler than that: they just want people to see what happens on days like this, and understand why rescuers keep showing up, again and again.
Because indifference costs lives. And choosing to act, even for a few minutes, can save one.
This old dog went from a rising tide and no way out, to safety, care, and a future he may never have had otherwise. That’s the kind of second chance every animal deserves.
