On August 10, 2026, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck Colombia, bringing down the Ana Pilar building in the Cuarto de Legua neighborhood of Cali in a matter of seconds.
Among those trapped beneath the rubble was Lenny Ruiz Fernández, a 38 year old lawyer originally from Pasto, Nariño, who had made Cali her home for years.
Beside her was her dog, Salomón.
When rescue teams finally reached them after hours of digging, Lenny had not survived. But beneath her body, still breathing, was Salomón.
Rescuers agreed the position they found her in was no accident. In her final moments, Lenny had shielded her dog from the collapse.
Lenny had been a longtime member of the Animal Defense Board of Pasto, where caring for animals was part of how she lived every day, not just an occasional act of kindness.
That same instinct appears to have guided her final decision.
Salomón is now recovering under medical care. He is eating, walking, and slowly beginning again.
Those who knew Lenny say that every time his story is told, hers is being told too, the story of a woman who, even as everything came down around her, chose to protect the one she loved.
