He built one of the biggest entertainment empires in the world. And when it came time to decide what happens to it, he chose the dogs.
Simon Cowell, the creator of American Idol, The X Factor, and Britain’s Got Talent, with an estimated net worth of around $600 million, has been refreshingly open about where he wants his money to go when he is gone.
It will not be going to his son Eric.
“I don’t believe in that,” Cowell has said publicly on multiple occasions, most recently in late 2025, explaining that he does not support the idea of simply passing wealth from one generation to the next.
Instead, the bulk of his estate is earmarked for charitable causes, with two areas taking priority: support for children in need, and animal welfare, particularly dogs.
His commitment to animals is not just a line in a will. Cowell has been a long-standing advocate for animal rights, contributing to organizations including Humane Society International and PETA over the years.
In 2022, he publicly confirmed that he had already written approximately $26 million USD into his will specifically designated for dog rescue organizations, including Battersea Dogs Home and Dogs Trust, two of the most respected dog welfare organizations in the United Kingdom.
For anyone who has ever adopted a rescue dog, volunteered at a shelter, or donated to an animal welfare fund, the scale of what that kind of commitment could mean for abandoned and abused animals around the world is difficult to overstate.
Millions of animals face neglect, abandonment, and abuse every year. Funding remains one of the single biggest challenges for rescue organizations trying to keep their doors open and their kennels clean.
Simon Cowell spent decades building a fortune judging talent. Turns out, his greatest act of judgment may be what he chooses to do with it.
Do you think more billionaires should follow this example?
